Well popular demand made us add it, so we're pretty sure it’s here to stay. RSS is still rather unappealing for most non-technical people.

Well yeah, but the reason we have this rule is this:
about 50% of our readers are foreign, and we want to keep this comments section relevant to everyone.
The "subscribe" may not be a drinking buddy, but we are definitely cooking something along those lines for you guys, and we'll let you know in good time.
